Sourcing your content from other areas

Monday, April 26, 2021

One great thing about gatbsy is the ability to source content from various different areas and starter kits or plugins available for most anything you might want to start with. An alternative to hand editing markdown files (or using netlifycms) is using products like Wordpress or Contentful.

Contentful is the new kid on the block, as Wordpress has been around for a while now. In fact most of my blogging way back when was on self hosted wordpress blogs. Let's take a look at the new guy. As you might have guessed they also have a starter kit to quickly get a blog up and running. Setting up a blog or a CMS system for someone that really just cares about the content - this seems like a great option.

Similar to using NetlifyCMS the content system has to be built to enforce and drive the rules of your content. For example, in the starter it requires a header image, so all your posts require an image selected, or uploaded by the user. Depending on your target audience or vertical, that might make sense, but as a tech focused blog - I was struggling to figure out what I would pick for each post as I was throwing together some content (Like this one).
